How a Metal Roof Can Save You Money

The light bulb has gone off in everyone’s heads about energy conservation and going green. Since that is the case, we want to share with you how metal roofing can offer you significant savings on your heating and cooling.

Metal roofs can have different finishes that will control how much solar radiation is collected, stored, and re-emitted into the atmosphere. This roofing system can save you 40% in energy costs! While the finish of your roofing material has a lot to do with the ability to save energy, there is also another way that these style roofs promote energy efficiency.

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory completed an experiment that was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy to really understand the differences in roofing. This study included comparing and testing an asphalt shingle roof to a stone-coated metal shake roof, both having comparable solar reflection and thermal emittance. The study showed that the asphalt shingles were nailed directly to the roof deck, which left no air space below the shingles, whereas the metal roofing was attached with a batten system, leaving air space below the material.

The metal roof showed a 45% reduction in the flow of heat, due mainly to the ventilation. The flow of air under the metal roof seemed to offer an insulating quality that was not present in the direct-nailed asphalt shingles. This is one way metal roofs are more energy efficient than an asphalt roof.

Different Finishes Produce Different Results

The finish you choose for your metal roof will make a difference in your energy savings. There are many different types of finishes, all of which help your roof accomplish something different.

  • Unpainted: An unpainted metal roof will reflect solar emissions and not absorb and hold onto heat the way an asphalt roof would.
  • Pre-painted or granular coated: A coated metal roof panel will reflect solar energy and make your home cooler by re-emitting most of the solar radiation. These types of roofs are ideal in warmer climates.
  • Highly reflective and highly emissive: This kind of metal roofing is optimal for reducing energy consumption. Its finish is often referred to as cool-metal roofing. This finish uses cool pigments in the paint, which increases the solar reflectance of the material and lowers the temperature of your roof. This helps reduce the energy usage in buildings that need air conditioning and can make it more comfortable in buildings that do not have air conditioning.
