Top 6 Signs of a Leaking Roof

Do you notice water stains on your ceiling? Is moss or mold growing in the spots where your exterior walls meet your roof? These are signs that your roof may be leaking. If you’re not sure how to find a roof leak, you should know about the warning signs you can look for. Here are six signs that your shingle roof may be leaking:

1. Missing Shingles

If you’ve noticed your roof is leaking, you should examine it, or at least have a professional roofer look at it. If you see any shingles missing from the roof, they may have been fastened to the roof deck improperly. Missing shingles often occur after storms or high-speed winds, so you should check the condition of your roof after these weather events occur.

2. Buckling or Curling Shingles

Roof shingles may buckle because their felt was improperly applied or because there has been movement in the roof’s deck. Shingles curl because of water absorption or hot air in the attic. When your roof’s shingles are buckled or curled, they will not protect your home or commercial building from leaks effectively.

3. Algae and Mold Growth

Algae and mold may begin to grow on your roof because airborne algae and fungi were deposited there. This growth will not dramatically shorten your shingles’ lifespans, but it can be evidence of potential problems, including leaks. If there is a leak, mold or moss may grow on your exterior walls, so that’s another reason you should look for this warning sign.

4. Granule Loss

Asphalt shingles will usually experience a bit of granule loss, especially right after installation. However, if your shingles are aging or reaching the end of their lifecycle, granule loss indicates that it’s time to replace them.

5. Debris in Downspouts

If you have clogged gutters and debris in your downspouts, your roofing materials may have problems. When you notice this problem, you should have your roof professionally inspected to see if there are any leaks, problem areas, or structural damage that might contribute to the debris accumulation.

6. Water Stains

One prominent sign of a leak in your building’s or home’s roof is a water stain on the ceiling or wall. Sometimes, these stains are obvious patches of moisture with rings of brown around the edges, but that’s not always the case. Ceiling and wall stains can also hide in plain sight in dark corners and other small spaces. Even so, if you find one of these stains, you should check for mold growth in the water stains. These stains may be accompanied by drips as well. When you find this moisture, it’s important to locate its source so you and a professional roofer can fix the problem.

What to Do When You Recognize These Warning Signs

When you notice one or more of these warning signs, you should try to find the leak in your roofing system. Once you find the source, you can determine whether you should implement a DIY solution or contact a professional roofer. If you cannot find it or if the problem is too difficult for a DIY fix, you should call a roofer for roof leak repairs. Also, if your roof is aging, you may have to consider roofing repairs or roof replacement. A good rule of thumb is if the repairs cost more than half the price of a new one, you should consider replacing it.
